I was talking with an old ultra buddy of mine the other day who has run about as much as I have the last few years. Both of us are a long way from our old form and the discussion turned to talking about whether or not we can ever get back to somewhere near where we used to be….factoring in a slow down for our older ages of course. My buddy and I used to organize one of the aid stations at the Rocky Raccoon 100 mile run. We would work the station for 2 days and instead of sleeping we would squeeze in a 20 mile run during our “break time” We used to meet at Memorial Park at 5am during the week to run 6 miles before work. (I live 25 miles from Memorial Park) At one point there was 5 of us meeting regularly and we would occasionally squeeze in the 10 mile River Oaks loop and still make it to work (another 15 mile drive from the park) by 8am all showered and ready for the day. One from the group from that time is still famous for doing a 21 mile run before work! His son had a swim meet and he had to get his long run in on a Friday. We were a bunch of mileage maniacs.
I have talked about getting back into some sort of shape for a couple years now and I’m still at square one…,we’ll maybe square 2. Last year I listed ten goals for 2007. Five of them were performance related of which I didn’t even come close to making. One goal was organizing a kids running program that didn’t get going. I did make the four coaching and volunteering goals I had set. Our Light the Night event was the biggest surprise raising over $150,000.00 with some 1300 walkers attending.
Here goes for 2008
Volunteer at the CB&I Tri and at two Run The Woodlands 5K’s
Work on the planning committees for Ten for Texas, Light The Night, Blazeman 179 Relay and one event TBA
Coach the Luke’s Beat Program and the WoodlandsFit Half Marathon Program
Help grow The Woodlands Running Club
Performance Goals
Here is what my ultra buddy and I decided. We will “just do something”. I’m not going to say how far, how fast, or anything. I will keep my log on line beginning December 31 whatever it is. I will run in the Texas Independence Relay and the San Antonio Rock-N-Roll Marathon, and I do want to run Sunmart. Other than that…..no planning, just running.
