(This is a slightly edited version of Jon Walk's description of this event that will appear in the May issue of The Woodlands Running Club newsletter - Deer Tracks)
Last November, Rick Cook, Bill Dwyer and Jon Walk created the “Montgomery County Triple” Award for those individuals who ran the Run Thru The Woods 5-Miler on Thanksgiving Day, the Conroe Turkey Trot 5K the day after and Run The Woodlands 5K on Saturday.
With some local history as a basis, Cook created an ultra- or trail-like award that consisted of three pine cones – one for each event – on a small piece of 2x4. The piece of wood represented the fact that the city of Conroe was created in 1884 as a sawmill town while the pine cones indicate that not only are we on the edge of the piney woods of east Texas, but also that The Woodlands’ mascot is “Puffy The Pine Cone.”
Rick, Jon and Conroe’s Scott Sexton ran all three. Former Caney Creek HS cross country runner and trickster Andrew Perry, who works for Luke’s Locker and helps coach its Beat program, ran the Thursday and Saturday events and race directed the City of Conroe Turkey Trot with his cousin. Bill completed the Run Thru The Woods with one of his Beat program participants, then DNF’ed* in the Turkey Trot before volunteering at Run The Woodlands 5K.
This month, the trio will christen the spring version of the “Montgomery County Triple” in an effort to encourage runners to support Montgomery County events and their respective charities by participating in the following races:
+ The YMCA Trail Run 5K Conroe, Saturday, May 12th
+ David’s Dream Run 5K The Woodlands, Saturday, May 19th
+ Run The Woodlands 5K, Saturday, May 26th
The awards will be presented at the completion of the Run The Woodlands 5K on Saturday, May 26th at Barbara Bush Elementary. These three (3) races must be completed to earn the award.
Adventurous runners can feasibly, with pre-registration for the YMCA Trail Run and a getaway car from Run The Woodlands, run two 5K’s on Saturday, May 12. RTW, as it always does, starts at 8:00 a.m. and the YMCA Trail Run begins at 9:15 a.m.
* Rick shaved the center pine cone on my award to represent the DNF that was caused by a nagging leg cramp
