Number Buffs

My friend Jon Walk ran his 199th race today in Willis. He is off to do number 200 tomorrow. Reading his entry made me wonder what my 199th and 200th races were. I've logged every race I have ever done so it was pretty easy to find. My race number 199 was the Houston Tenneco Marathon on Jan. 14, 1990 which I finished in 3:20:18. Race number 200 was a 5K two weeks later in OakRidge which I did in 19:50. ( back in my faster days ).

I looked back to my first ever road race which was the Utica Falling Leaves 14K. ( I don't count my HS track races ). This event is still run in my home town and is still the non standard distance of 14K. I ran my first race in October of 1978 and my 200th race in January of 1990 a stretch of 11 years and 4 months.

How long has Jon been running ? I'm not sure but I do know it's a lot less than 11 years. I think it's more like 3 years. He sure has racked up some races and if I don't get going he will catch me in about 3 more years.

One interesting thing is that Jon has run 10 marathons during this stretch and the Houston Marathon in 1990 was my 9th.

Update - Jon is off to Jacksonville, FL to run his 11th marathon and race #200.

Wow! 3:20:18 and 19:50.

I've got to back off some, actually. I think I'll be helping you out at RTW #168 and then #169 will be first race at the age of 40! Then I get to age grade it! :)

When I run Houston, it will mark the 4th anniversary of me doing my first running event. I was a sad sight -- lol -- mock turtleneck covered with a XXL t-shirt, sweat pants and a baseball cap ... but I ran a 4-miler in 12:53/mile.

There's still cracks on Crawford Street.
